‘Mr. Deer’, ‘Starvation’ in competition line at Lisbon Fest

Two animations from Iran are to vie in the 19th Monstra Lisbon Animated Film Festival.

Two animations from Iran are set to take part at the 19th edition of the Monstra Lisbon Animated Film Festival.

The Short Film category of 2019 Mosntra Filmfest will host Mojtaba Mousavi’s stop-motion animation ‘Mr. Deer’ which is narrated in a modern but ruined subway in an unknown time.

“People in this society have animal faces, they have forgotten humanity and ethics, and they do not avoid sins. Meanwhile, someone with a deer face is trying to reform the society,” offered as the synopsis of the piece.

Produced by Elaheh Farnia, ‘Mr. Deer’ previously received an award from the international competition section of the 36th Fajr Int'l Film Festival as well as Special Award of the 28th Zagreb Animation Festival (Animafest) in Croatia.

It has also gone on screen at a number of international film events before, including the 2018 Annecy Int’l Animation Film Festival in France, the 26th Anima Mundi Film Festival in Brazil, the 2018 Anibar Int’l Animation Festival in Kosovo, the 2018 Strasbourg European Fantastic Film Festival in France, the 48th Giffoni Film Festival in Italy, and the 2018 Melbourne Int’l Film Festival in Australia.

This goes on with ‘Starvation’ by Zahra Rostampour which will be screened as another Iran representative in the Student Films category of the event.

‘Starvation’ is a 7-minute short animated film about stereotypes which cause misconceptions; and shows that the world leaders’ greed and corruption will bring nothing but poverty and starvation to the lower class of society.

The plot summery comes as “A hungry wolf gets stuck in stereotypes about being the big bad wolf of the story. She has to flee when everybody accuses her of violence and murder. She faces the danger of getting killed.”

Lisbon Animation Festival is “an event where animated film meets other media and arts, aiming to present, disseminate, experiment and discuss ideas, crossing over new artistic approaches and forms, on which animated film is the narrative and aesthetic expression.”

The festival’s main goal is to present and promote the best animated films made all over the world.

The Portuguese capital will host the event from March 20-31, 2019.
